Leaving Rainbow River Lodge after a really special time there, I drove north and west, past Divundu, to Rundu where I had a look at the riverfront places – lodges and the Rundu Beach. Further west along the Cubango River to Shankara Rest Camp. Where I could, I drove on the dirt road that runs nearer to the river than the tarred B8 road. It ran through villages and past big shady trees, quite often in sight of the big clear river on its way to forming the amazing Okavango Delta before sinking into the Kalahari sands; Namibians call it the Kavango as it crosses the Caprivi Strip, then when it enters Botswana the Motswana call it the Okavango.
Shankara Camp was lovely, right on the riverbank. Shady, affordable camping, good hot showers, cold beer available. They have a big shady deck right over the water to chill on.
