An Hour in Maun

Jess, your own hair is lovely, I suggest you put aside the wigs, extensions, doeks and headdresses and have your own hair sorted out. I think you’ll be cooler in this heat, you’ll like it better and you’ll have less fuss n upkeep. Advice oft-repeated, you know how Dads can be.

Today she decides maybe that’s not a bad idea. Starts a WhatsApp convo with Bobo. They agree on what’s to be done, when and where to find her.

Jess adds another message: I’ve neglected my own hair what with all the add-ons, it’ll take some untangling. No prob, can do, says Bobo.

It’ll take about an hour.

I drop her off and go to replace the CO2 bombs for the soda water dispenser. Then off to a grogshop for a cold can of a cheap local ‘energy drink.’

Over half an hour has passed so I cruise nearby looking to find a rare shady spot to park n wait rather than go home and back.  Shade is a scarce commodity and under every good tree there’s a stall and I’m not going to block their customers.

I find an unoccupied tree, I wait.

Three hours later Jess emerges, looking great and very happy with Bobo’s service, her expertise and friendliness.

Bobo’s little girl was in the salon, having fun, watching n learning. When Jess was alone briefly she came to her, held one of her plaits and said, “Don’t cry auntie, I’ll make you look good!”

. . and she did!
