Just had a magnificent drive S of Satara on the road that meanders along the Sweni river. (yeah, Way Down Upon the Sweni River… ). We beetled West along the Orpen road then back East along the left bank of the Sweni far far from home, with the setting sun behind us.
Beautiful trees and grasslands, lots of plains game and then a herd of about 30 eles rushing across the road in a helluva rush, ears flapping, who knows why. Panic? Thirst? Impressive sight.
Three more – bigger – ele herds, including one with a tiny bebe. Then baboons with the smallest baby ever, sitting half a metre from Ma, not clamped to her. Saddlebill storks, swifts, tawny eagle, first Didric – or Diderik – calling. Then the fading light of evening. Paradise.
Now the air has turned a strange green hue. Oh wait, I’m on my bungalow stoep looking thru a Windhoek lager bottle.
That was yestiddy. This morning an early walk found a mobbing bird party in a big thorntree near the camping area. My zeiss binnies found a Batis, then I saw a piece of bark duck as the batis flew at it, then look indignant. ‘Twas a Pearl-spotted Owlet.
