To Bots Sept 2022

In brief:

Serviced the mighty 2008 Ford Ranger 3L turbodiesel.
Wayne said, ‘I’ll do it like I was driving to Bots myself. I’ll change filters n oil n brake fluid. And even tho your fan belts are new, I’m changing them so you have spares that you KNOW fit. Does your cambelt need changing?’
My what?
‘Your cambelt.’
Um . .
I phoned Harrismith Ford. Martin said No, We Changed It Last Service.
OK. There you go, see how paraat I am?

Wayne pronounced the mighty ’08 Ranger absolutely hundred cement except for slightly collapsing front left suspension, but otherwise perfect. He fixed that. Ready for a safari!

‘Your logbook is for a Ford Bantam 1300,’ he said. Oh. So why don’t I get better mileage then? I asked. I think he might have rolled his eyes.
..
North to PTA / Tshwane to Pete n Terry luxury home pitstop.
Filled my water tank, ate their delish meals.
..
NW to Groblers Bridge border crossing
Palapye – Serowe – Orapa – Maun and Janet.
Had to eat more delish meals, watch great birds, endure early am walks along Tamalakhane river.

Pre-trip meeting with Lee n Dwayne at the Duck to plan for CKGR.

Digby Bullock at Aliboat moved my awning slot to the lower side of my canopy. Better.
Buy a Jerry can at Rileys.
Buy medevac insurance for a year. If I get the sniffles, a helicopter will swoop down from above and take me to a comfy bed.

Dwayne fitted the ole Ranger with LED lightbulbs all round. What a difference!

Meet TomBob n Andy Dandridge at Tandoorai for too many beers n jagermeisters. Ready for the bush.

Central Kalahari at last!

Lee organised his umpteenth trip to the CKGR – the Central Kalahari Game Reserve – and my first! His frequent fellow-travelers Hans and Karina joined him on their annual visit from the Netherlands; as did Dwayne the pilot; he also invited Janet – and me! At last, a trip to a long-desired destination.

We headed east to Makalamabedi, then south along a long cutline to Motsware gate. On to Deception Pan. Kori campsite No.2 I think.

– water attracts all sorts of creatures to camp –

Day trips in Lee and Dwayne’s Toyotas to Owen’s camp for sundowners; Sundays Pan – water pumped; Campsite on dune for brunch – delish; Leopard Pan.

Struggling to get a deckchair back into its bag, Lee says he knows why. At the factory in Australia the worker asks, Where’s This Batch Going? Suffefrica, says the foreman. Right, make the bags 10% smaller, they all shout in unison.

I got a Lifer at Sundays Pan: Barred Wren-warbler
