Suddenly the frogs are making their presence known. The Guttural Toads’ guttural snoring and Bush Squeakers’ wheepee-wheep have been joined by Bronze Cacos’ metallic scrape n click, and Painted Reed Frogs’ whipp-whipp sharp whistles. This morning a Red Toad added a sonorous bass whoob. More to follow as the days warm up.
They’ve joined the nagapies and the good-lord deliver us nightjars to make me enjoy my night-time stoepsitting on this coastal forest edge as much as my morning coffee listening to the dawn chorus.

Hey, maybe I’ve died and gone to heaven!

Update: Jess spotted a Painted Reed Frog hopping across the road on her walk and called me. Tiny – about the size of your pinky finger’s littlest joint.

There are also ‘frog calls’ high overhead in the early evenings here in my forest fringe! They’re made by Knob-billed Ducks flying to their roost.

.. and yesterday the rattle and creaky croak of a River Frog.

… and today a Natal Tree Frog. He hasn’t quacked yet, he’s just perched quietly on the gas bottle.
